Fernando Ayala, who immigrated to the U.S. at age 12, has become California’s latest millionaire following a stunning $15 million lottery win.

Reports indicate Ayala initially purchased a Royal Jackpot scratch-off ticket and claimed a more modest $40 prize. The ticket was bought at a Quik Stop located at 601 N. Cloverdale Boulevard in Cloverdale, Sonoma County.

Though that prize wasn’t a multi-million dollar windfall, Ayala returned the next day and used his $40 winnings to buy another ticket. This time around, he hit a staggering $15 million jackpot.

Ayala Has No Plans to Cease Working

In a conversation with California Lottery officials, Ayala shared that his life in the U.S. hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

I was sleeping by the river and washed dishes for years. I never made this kind of money and I know how hard it is to earn a living.

While Ayala’s life has since improved—he’s married and has a child—he acknowledged that the prize money will be a huge boon, allowing him to spend more time with his family and live life to the fullest.

Even so, Ayala stated he doesn’t plan to quit working. Having worked his entire life, he understands the value of money, and hard work has become a core part of his identity.

Other Californians Score Major Wins

In related news, a California player recently won a Match 5 prize from Powerball. Normally, this prize is $1 million (or $2 million if Power Play is active), but the player received $470,739 because the California Lottery adjusts prize amounts based on ticket sales volume.

Last month, two players at Sky River Casino won a combined total of $580,000.
