Casino Nova Scotia to Relocate from Downtown Halifax

(AsiaGameHub) –   Efforts to move Casino Nova Scotia from the Halifax waterfront to Dartmouth Crossing are moving forward. The provincial government has finalized an agreement with Great Canadian Entertainment to construct a new gaming facility in Dartmouth. The firm will oversee the building, management, and ongoing maintenance of the venue, which is slated for a 2029 launch.

The Old Property Will Be Available for Redevelopment

As reported by The Chronicle Herald, the relocation has been a strategic process. Following extensive deliberations, Dartmouth Crossing was identified as the ideal location due to its prominence as a commercial and retail center situated across the harbour. The site provides clear benefits, including easy highway access, nearby hotel accommodations, and consistent pedestrian traffic.

The current waterfront casino in Halifax will continue operations throughout the transition period. Meanwhile, the province has initiated the search for prospective buyers for the existing site. Terms of the license guarantee that the land can be redeveloped without any restrictions related to the previous casino lease. While officials estimate the sale process could span 12 to 18 months, a definitive schedule has not been established.

Great Canadian Entertainment has secured the purchase of land adjacent to the Dartmouth Crossing retail area and is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary municipal permits. Both the company and the province, represented by the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation, are sharing the expenses for construction and relocation, as well as the provision of gaming hardware.

Dartmouth Crossing Boasts Notable Advantages

Although the move offers clear benefits, some critics have raised concerns regarding the impact on downtown Halifax. The casino has been a staple of the waterfront for many years, having first opened in 1995 before relocating to its current dedicated facility in 2000. Its presence has played a role in the local tourism and nightlife sectors, drawing in both residents and tourists.

Government officials have dismissed these concerns, maintaining that the new site will be highly advantageous for the Halifax Regional Municipality over the long term. They pointed out that Dartmouth Crossing is already a destination for visitors from across the province, making it a logical choice to maintain or even increase gaming-related patronage.

The province anticipates no negative impact on revenue. Last year, casino operations in Sydney and Halifax produced over $40 million, funds that are vital for supporting public services such as education and health care. Authorities state that these revenue levels are expected to remain consistent, regardless of the casino’s physical location.
