SAN FRANCISCO (REUTERS) – Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has said his company will probably launch the prototype of a humanoid robot called “Tesla Bot” next year.

The robot would “eliminate dangerous, repetitive, boring tasks”, he added.

The robot, which has a human-like appearance, would carry out the work that people like to do least, with “profound implications for the economy”, Mr Musk said at Tesla’s AI Day event on Thursday (Aug 19).

The company unveiled at the event chips it had designed in-house for its fast computer, Dojo, to train its automated driving system.

Mr Musk said Dojo would be operational next year.

A few years ago, Mr Musk asked Tesla engineers “to design a super-fast training computer and that’s how we started Project Dojo”, Tesla director Ganesh Venkataramanan said at the AI Day event.
